Computer literacy is an important skill in modern life given that a great many employment and educational opportunities require at least basic familiarity with various programmes. Unfortunately, unemployed and otherwise less advantaged members of society often struggle to access computers, which can have crippling effects on their work and study prospects.
YMCA Cape Town offers introductory classes that cater to around 10 learners and run for 8 weeks. The curriculum focuses on computer essentials, basic software, internet browsing and creating emails. While the learners typically hail from rehabilitation centres and shelters for the homeless, they have also served YMCA Cape Town’s maintenance staff.
