SUMMERCAMP 2017 – #iAmValuable

As we embark on the new year, we saw it fitting to reflect on one of our biggest highlights from last year which was our summer camp.

The very successful camp led by a group of our most dedicated and well-loved volunteers, saw us hosting 30 kids from our signature programmes (Y-Zone & Y-Arts) for 3 days at the picturesque SOS Outdoor Centre in Villiersdorp.

The programme, aimed at stimulating the body, mind and spirit, took the edutainment approach which contributed to our camp theme of Self-Worth, touching on everything from self-esteem and confidence to respect. Some of these activities included: aerobics, a night hike, recycling fashion show, bundu bash obstacle course, fire life-skills facilitated by a very experienced boy scout and games evening.

The groups competed against each other to earn points based on team spirit, participation, team work, respect and support. In the end, everyone was a winner as we shared the prizes among all the participants.

This camp in particular was a little bit different than the years before, as we incorporated performance elements into our group activities to create a social campaign focused on the kids using their voices and talents to say “NO” to a life of bad choices, behaviours, activities etc. where they took ownership of their lives and spaces to realise their own worth and take a stand to say that there is better out there for all of them and that where they come from and what they are surrounded with, will not dictate where they will be going and what their futures will be.

They took a stand and voiced their worth and through song, dance, drama and visual art and skillfully expressed the theme “I AM VALUABLE”. We couldn’t be more proud of these future active citizens!

Another big highlight was the food, of course! We would like to extend a very special thank you to our chef for the weekend, Mr. Rafiek Felton, who kept nutrition at the height of his meal preparation and executed the menu with great passion. He made sure the kids were well fed and kept them coming back for more!

Furthermore we say a big thank you to everyone; the sponsors, donors, parents and partners who contributed to helping us give these very deserving kids a summer adventure of a lifetime.

Sponsors include: Coca Cola, aQuellé, Appletiser and Wholesome Bread.

We are all very grateful and we are looking forward to what Summer Camp 2018 has in store for us. If you want any more information on how to get involved with summercamp 2018, feel free to send an email to holidaycamps@ymcacapetown.org.za
